Upper Fairmount · Fairmount District No. 6 · Somerset County, Maryland
Cemetery No. 911-X-27-Center
Community Cemetery lies in Upper Fairmount on Fishing Island Road, about one-quarter mile north of the former Ford’s Store and the intersection of Fairmount and Fishing Island roads. The burial ground is reached by a private dirt drive on the east side of the road and occupies a relatively high piece of land.
The cemetery was interpreted as a community burial ground because separate family areas were marked by fencing. Conditions varied by section; some areas were maintained while others were heavily covered with ivy and brush.
Latitude38.111067°

Historic setting: The site is near the homes of Capt. H. F. Chelton and Thomas E. Hall shown on the 1877 Atlas.
Transcription note: Readings are based on the cemetery records and available gravestone photographs. Illegible or incomplete portions are identified rather than reconstructed.

Site and Preservation Notes
The original 1997 survey recorded a mixture of fenced family plots, unmarked vaults, fallen stones, and sections obscured by vegetation. The cemetery was revisited in 2020 and again on January 18, 2021. During the 2021 visit, the team demonstrated probing and careful cleaning.
Later photographs also document additional work at the site.
