HOUSTON CEMETERY

Jill Pevear, one of the most prolific cemetery data transcribers for Wicomico County, has come through again! Thanks, Jill, for all your hard work.

Here's what Jill has to say about this cemetery, located on Commerce Street, south of Route 50 (Salisbury Parkway):

This is the cemetery on the other side of the road from Salisbury Cemetery. The book "Graveyards and Gravestones of Wicomico" by John Jacob lists both sides of the road as the same cemetery. However, there is a plaque at the far side of this cemetery (away from the road) that reads: "Houston Cemetery 11 Nov 1996 Dedicated by Spirit of Democracy Auxiliary Unit 145 American Legion, Salisbury, Maryland". I only found one gravestone that was listed in Jacob’s book on this side of the road. The grass had been cut and the grounds were well mantained. Two people who live in Salisbury told me that they believed this cemetery (or cemeteries) was/were used at one time as a "potter’s field". That might explain why at least one third (or maybe even one half) of the graves were either unmarked or had broken or unreadable stones. Be that as it may.

Ed. note: The 1877 Eastern Shore Atlas contains a map of Salisbury which clearly shows a single larger cemetery divided into 2 sections. The larger section is labeled simply as "cemetery", and the smaller section as "cold cem." I do not know whether this division coincides with the way the two grave areas are apparantly currently divided by Commerce Street.
