Waters Cemetery

Located in the Mt. Vernon area, about one mile north of the small community of Widgeon and near the home of Dr. T. W. Stone shown on the 1877 Atlas of the Eastern Shore.

When the cemetery was recorded in 1994, the markers appeared to have been moved from their original locations, probably to protect them from farming operations. The stones were leaning against trees at the edge of a field near a creek making out of the south side of the Wicomico River. The markers are hand-cut stones.

Site status: The markers were already displaced when recorded in 1994; their original positions within the burying ground are uncertain.

Coordinate note: The supplied Miller's Choice Genealogy records are not fully consistent. The Word/PDF version gives 38° 16' 15" N, 75° 46' 05" W; another supplied PDF gives 38° 15' 15" N, 75° 46' 10" W. Both readings are preserved here rather than silently reconciled.

Cemetery and Family Notes

Ed Smith identified this as the Waters Cemetery and noted that the property was where the Walker family lived and was the birthplace of Samuel Chase. That accompanying note is preserved here as donor-supplied historical context.

A supplied genealogical file identifies Thomas Waters as born circa 1745 in Coventry Parish, Somerset County, a son of William Waters and Rose Harmanson. It records a marriage to Margaret Lucas circa 1770 and a later marriage to Susanna Jacob on 20 April 1799 in Northampton County, Virginia. Thomas made his will on 1 March 1817 in Somerset County; it was proved 18 April 1817.

The cemetery transcription itself does not establish that the Mrs. Susanna Waters buried here is the Susanna Jacob named in the supplied genealogical file, although the dates and family context make that a research question worth noting.
