This small burial site lies near historic Clifton in Revell’s Neck, with a view toward the Manokin River. Only one visible grave marker was documented: the broken horizontal slab of Sally A. Curtis.

The supplied field note places the grave 375 feet north 12° east of the center of the house known as Clifton and 400 feet south 30° east of the Manokin River shoreline.

Underneath this stone lies the body of
Sally A. Curtis
Daughter of James & [name unclear] Elsey
Was born the [day unclear] April 1780
And died the 19th September 1806
Aged 26 years

The newspaper account preserved with the cemetery file also identifies her as a 26-year-old woman who died in 1806.

Cemetery and Research Notes

A newspaper clipping preserved with the cemetery file reports that the approximately 35-by-35-foot plot was enclosed by decorative wrought-iron fencing and was given to the Somerset County Historical Society for preservation. The article identifies the grave as that of 26-year-old Sallie/Sally A. Curtis and describes the site as adjoining Clifton.

2016 Site Photographs: Surviving Ironwork

Photographs dated March 6, 2016, show sections of decorative ironwork resting across Sally A. Curtis’s grave slab and in the grass nearby. The earlier newspaper clipping above depicts the fenced burial plot; these later views document the condition of surviving ironwork during the 2016 visit.
