Somerset County, Dublin Election Dist. Cokesbury area just south of Dividing Creek on Courthouse Hill Road. Near the residence of W. Polk on the 1877 Atlas of the Eastern Shore.

The Polk Cemetery is located on a tract of land called Suffolk, patented by William Morris for 1000 acres 11 June 1679. On April 18th, 1807 John Waters and wife Elizabeth sold to Whittington Polk 330 acres of Suffolk. Whittington also held parts of other tracts in the area (Beauchamps Venture, Cladicutt, Killmaynham, Road, and Smiths Hope).

Site status: Extant when recorded in 2006. The cemetery measured about 15 feet x 25 feet and was enclosed by a concrete block wall with a working black iron gate. Current status has not been independently verified.

Cemetery and Family Notes

Cemetery measures about 15 feet x 25 feet, enclosed by a concrete block wall with black iron gate that works.

Note: Rebecca was apparently the widow of Pierce Chapman (Ruth Dryden Land records page 33). Whittington Polk was apparently the son of Benjamin Polk (Ruth Dryden Land records page 371).

Note: Whittington Polk, son of Benjamin and Sarah (Whittington) married first on Dec. 5, 1797 to Rebecca (Collins) Chapman, Somerset Co. Lic. They had no issue. He married second on Jan. 7, 1823 to Rebecca C. Adams, they had three sons Whittington Polk Jr., William Stephens Collins Polk and Emerson Groff Polk, and two daughters Rebecca Collins Polk and Sarah Elizabeth Polk.
