Cullen Cemetery at Byrdtown

Byrdtown / Crisfield · Crisfield District No. 7 · Somerset County, Maryland

Site reference 911-QQ-23

The Cullen family burial ground is in low woods south of Calvary Road and east of Lloyd Webb Road, near Ware Point Marsh in the Byrdtown area. The January 1994 survey describes a heavily overgrown site with one surviving inscribed headstone, two initialed footstones, a headstone base, and a brick grave.

Phil Goldsborough reported that neighbors remembered additional graves at the site. The original survey associates the ground with the historic Bay Bush Hall tract but does not establish identities for the other burials.

Cemetery and Research Notes

Local recollections described more burials than the surviving stones could establish. The survey also mentions Woodrow Wilson’s report of a James L. Cullen (1834–1866); this is not treated as a newly identified marker.

Phil and Candy Woodrow Cullen reached the overgrown site on foot on January 9, 1994. The recorded access conditions refer to that visit, not to present-day conditions.

Survey: Philip L. Goldsborough and Candy Woodrow Cullen, January 9, 1994. The source identifies the historic district as Crisfield District No. 7 (and later Asbury District No. 12).
