Brinkley Cemetery

Located about one and quarter miles northwest of the town of Marion Station Maryland, on Coulbourn Creek Road in a large field in tillage on the north side of said road. A search turned up only one grave at this site, however it is safe to say that others were there at one time based on the bricks found in the general area. Farming operations over the years have confined the cemetery to an area of about 300 square feet. There is one large tree growing on this site and can be seen from the Coulbourn Creek Road.
This cemetery is located on the original patent called Colbourn patented 18 Aug. 1663 to Stephen Horsey for 650 Acres. The tract remained in the Horsey Family through the 18th century. Sometime in the early 1800’s part of the tract was in the possession of Joseph Brinkley. On 17 Oct. 1838 a survey was made by John Bowland for Elizabeth Brinkley widow of the aforesaid Joseph Brinkley now deceased. Her part of Colbourn was surveyed to include 329 1/4 acres. The survey was ordered by Judicial proceedings (Jud. Rec. 1840-44 L.H. page 56) and plat recorded in Som. Co. Plats (Microfilm CR 47-026). The plat shows the home of Elizabeth Brinkley in the same location of the cemetery.
The original location was estimated from the Marion quadrangle as 38 deg. 03' 12" north latitude, 75 deg. 47' 13" west longitude; North 44 degrees West true 2600 feet from the intersection of Charles Cannon Road and Colbourn Creek Road, about 800 feet SW of a small gut or creek known in colonial times as Ipsenancy Creek. Coordinates were corrected by Google Earth in February 2011 by P.L.G.

Site status: Extant when documented. Only one marked grave was found; brick remains suggested additional burials, and farming operations had reduced the site to about 300 square feet. Current status has not been independently verified.
