Transcription
In the name of God Amen I John Townsend Sr. of Somerset County in Province
of Maryland, planter being sick in body but of sound & perfect Memory,
praised be Almighty God and calling to remembrance the Uncertain Estate of
this transitory Life and that all flesh must yield unto Death when it shall
please god to call doe Make constitute ordain and declare this my Last will
and Testament in manner and form following. Revoking and adnulling all
former wills and testaments by me made either by word or by writing and
this only to be taken for my Last Will and Testament and no other and first
being Penetent and Sorry from the bottom of my hart for my sins past humbly
deserving forgiveness for the same I give & Commit my soul to Almighty God
My saviour & redeemer in Whom and through the Morrels of Jesus Christ I
trust and believe assuredly to be saved and that My soul with my body and
the geniall day of resurrection shall rise again with Joy to posess and
unleash the Kingdom of heaven prepared for his elect and chosen And now for
the setting of my temporal estate and such goods and chattles as it hath
pleased Almighty God four above my deserts to bestow upon me doe order give
and dispose the same in Manner and form following.
First I will that all those debts that I owe or right or conscience to any
person or persons whatsoever be well and Truly Satisfied and paid or
ordained to be paid within convenient time after my decease by my Executor
hereafter named and that my body be burried in a decent and Christian Like
Manner.
ITEM I give and bequeath unto my son John Townsend Jr a parcel of Land
containing Two
Hundred Acres, called Oak Hall, Likewise another parcell of Land
containing One Hundred Acres called Townsends Discovery to him the
said John Townsend his heirs and assigns for ever
ITEM I give and bequeath unto my son Solomon Townsend Two Hundred Acres of
Land
called Coventry after my wifes decease, but in case my said son
Solomon die without issue that then my son Charles Townsend shall
imediately posess and enjoy the Said land
ITEM I give and bequeath ( after my wifes deceased) unto my son Charles
Townsend my Negro
woman called Betty but if so happens the said Negro woman Shall have
any children before my said wifes decease that the said increase be at
my said wifes disposal
ITEM I give and bequeath unto my son William Townsend my Negro boy called
Toby after my
wifes decease
ITEM I give and bequeath unto my son Jeremiah Townsend Twelve pence
ITEM I give and bequeath unto my son James Townsend Twelve pence
ITEM I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth wife to Robert Smith
Twelve pence
ITEM I give and bequeath the remaining part of my Personal Estate unto my
well beloved wife
Elizabeth Townsend and the children that remain with her but in case
any of the said children shall Marrie or go away from their said
Mother, then the said personal Estate shall be divided and that person
share shall be delivered to him or her to take away, but the remainer
shall continue with their Mother to be taken care of and Manged for
the good of her and the children that remain with her in Generall In
Witness and conformation of what is before Written, I have hereunto
sett my hand and, Seal this Eighteenth day of May 1698.

Memorandum That this Last day of Fber 1698 proof was made of that of the
above Will by the Oath of all the Witnesses Then Sworn Executrix &
appraisers and Granted Later testormy Both copies of will refuse by said
