James W. Combs, son of Robert Henry Combs and his first wife, Maria Hayden, was born 1828 in St. Mary's County and died in June 1905 at Fredericktown, Washington County, KY. He is the older man seated in the middle of this picture.

On the back of the picture is a notation that the man to his left is his son and to his right is his son-in-law. No other identification was given.

A note by Mr. Fenwick reads "Jim Combs, raised in and around Leonardtown, MD. Was clerk in Edelen's store in Leonardtown. This store was called 'Sleepy Hollow Store' and stood on the site of the present (1957) Methodist Church. Jim Combs was a veteran of the Mexican War. He moved to Kentucky. He was a fast friend of Edwin Coad of Cherryfields."

According to the "Chronicles of St. Mary's", James W. Combs moved to Cincinnati, Ohio about 1853 and then to KY.
