Forbes Britton was born in Clarksville, Mecklenburg County, VA in 1812. He graduated from West Point in 1834. He spent most of his military career moving the Indians from the southeastern U.S. to the western states. After serving in the Mexican War, he was promoted to the rank of Captain.

In 1850 he resigned his commission and moved his family to Corpus Christi, Texas. He was elected to the Texas State Legislature in 1857 and served until 1860 when he was commissioned Chief of Staff to Sam Houston and given the rank of Brigadier General.

He died on February 14, 1861 in Austin, Texas while attending a special session of the Legislature. (Research of J. Pat Smith).
