FOUNTAIN, WATERS posted by Robyn Smith on Thursday, October 4, 2001

I am looking for information on the WATERS family of Somerset County, in the 1800s, specifically Thomas WATERS and his wife Susannah (they had no children). I am researching my African-American WATERS ancestors. Several of them married women with the FOUNTAIN surname.

COX, STERLING posted by JoLynne Vincent on Sunday, October 14, 2001

I am looking for the mother of Clara COX, b May 17,1862, d March 1,1931 in Crisfield Maryland. Clara married James R. STERLING on January 3, 1882, also of Crisfield. Her Father was James E. COX, b1832 in Crisfield. The 1860 census shows a James E. COX with wife 'Hester'. In 1870, the Census shows a James E. COX with 'Margaret'. Does anyone have knowledge of which was Clara's mother? Clara was my great- grandmother, making this person my g-g-grandmother. I would appreciate any assistance. Thank you.

MADDUX, NEWBOLD posted by Cree Newbold on Sunday, November 11, 2001

Would like to exchange information with anyone who has performed research on the MADDUX surname relating to the Lazarus MADDUX who died in Somerset County in 1735, leaving a will making mention of his wife Margaret and a number of children, including a Thomas and an Alexander. Reason: Ruth Dryden, in her book abstracting land transactions by tract name, on p. 312-313, lists over 60 different records for a property known as or related to "Newtown". The MADDUX name is very prominent in this abstract, beginning with a mention of a mention of an Alexander MADDUX buying land from a John KIBBLE in 1695, and ending with a mention of an Elzey MADDUX of Somerset County in 1799. My principal interest in this is that Thomas MADDUX, son of Lazarus, is called on 5 separate occasions by Dryden, first in 1759, and last in 1795 per his will, as Thomas NEWBOLD MADDUX. There are a couple mentions of NEWBOLD individuals in these pages as well: two of Thomas NEWBOLD [1759 & 1760] and one of John NEWBOLD [1760]. From other records, John NEWBOLD is associated with the "Newtown" property, which is, according to a map provided in the Dryden book, adjacent to properties known to have been owned by NEWBOLDs from 1678 into the 1770s. If Thomas NEWBOLD MADDUX was his true full name, it would suggest a close tie to the NEWBOLD family by the MADDUX family, perhaps by marriage. Thomas' father Lazarus, per his Will, had a wife named Margaret. Was she one of Thomas NEWBOLD's daughters, Margaret, as named in his Will of 1713? Enough of my wild speculations -- here's hoping someone in this forum might have a few more bits of information related to this possible connection. Thanks!

DAKES, DEAKES, DIKES posted by Laurie Dykes Fowers on Friday, December 7, 2001

Trying to find proof of parentage of Daniel DIKES, born abt. 1720 probably in Somerset Co. and who died 1760 in Worcester Co. MD. His wife filed her obligation to provide an inventory for her deceased husband, Daniel, on 2 Jan 1761 with Isaac KELLAM and Nicholas HAYMAN. Daniel's father was probably one of two brothers, either Edward DIKES/DEAKES or George DIKES/DEAKES, although there was a John DIKES/DAKES that lived in Somerset Co. at the same time frame as the above listed George and Edward. Daniel married a Sarah (maybe HAYMAN, dau of William HAYMAN) in abt. 1746-8. They were the parents of at least 6 children: Daniel, born abt. 1748, died. by Dec 1773; Arthur, born abt. 1750, died by May 1775; Stephen, born 1753; Mary, born abt. 1756; John/James, born abt. 1758; Sarah, born abt. 1760. Arthur may have been the Arthur who married an Elizabeth and had two children. Stephen married Betty Parker, daughter of George PARKER Jr., a millwright. Mary married a John SMITH by 1775. Sarah married George PARKER, a son of Elisha or Jacob PARKER. If anyone has any information on any of these families that might prove more definate links, I would be appreciative! Thanks for reading the above.

LOWREY, LOWRY posted by John R. Sanders on Monday, December 31, 2001

One of my grandfathers was a John LOWRY (LOWREY) that was to have come from Scotland. I know that he served in the Revolutionary War as a private in the 7th Maryland Regiment. He was wounded at the Battle Of Canden, SC in Aug 1780, lost a leg as a result and received a half-pay pension from Somerset County. He had a son, William Alexander LOWRY, who wound up in Tennessee and had a son, William Alexander LOWRY, Jr. Does anyone have any info on John's background?

CARLISLE posted by Sarah Carlisle on Sunday, February 17, 2002

I am looking for any information concerning Carlisles that came over from Scotland to Eastern Shore, Maryland in 1712. I believe that they either came to Caroline or Somerset County. So, I have sent queries for both. Specifically, the name of the CARLISLE that came over from Scotland is Alexander CARLISLE. According to records he became the owner of considerable amounts of land. He had two sons: Adam CARLISLE and John CARLISLE. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
