Josiah Watkins and Elizabeth Gowty were natives of the Caroline County / Sussex County area, Elizabeth being born in Caroline County, and Josiah born in Sussex County.
        Josiah was first married in 1842 to Deborah Wright, daughter of William and Ellender Wright of CarolineCounty.   Elizabeth was first married in 1839 to William McKendre Davis, son of Rev. William Davis and Amelia Cannon.  Josiah and Elizabeth were married on July 28, 1848, in Sussex Co., Delaware, her father-in-law, Rev. William Davis, performed the ceremony.
        They may have lived for a short time after their marriage in Sussex County, but by 1850 were living in the Federalsburg area of Caroline County.  In 1865, after the close of the Civil War, they went west to Indiana, settling near relatives who had preceeded them to Indiana, in the little town of Milford, now Green Hill, in Warren County, where they lived until their deaths.  Both are interred in the Davis Cemetery in Green Hill, Warren County, Indiana.   A few other family members buried in Davis Cemetery are Josiah's half-brother, William Henry Watkins and his wife Amanda Marie Davis (daughter of Elizabeth Gowty and William M.K. Davis); Allifair Watkins Banning (married Willam Banning) and Clement Watkins, Sr., siblings of Josiah's father, William; and William Stewart, a husband of Josiah's aunt, Ann Watkins.
