Baltimore City Queries for December 1997

While researching the 1860 Census for the 18th Ward of Baltimore in 1988,I came to the conclusion that pages were missing and received confirmation of the fact that pages were lost before they were microfilmed. The National Archives reviewed the 15original volumes of the 1860 Maryland Census and confirmed that the first 338 pages of the 18th Ward are missing, leaving out 2143 dwellings and 2316 households. The final letter from National Archives closed: "Simply stated, we have not been able to account for the 338 missing pages from the 1860 Baltimore Census". Now that so many people are on the internet, it occurred to me that the MDGenWeb page would be a good place to post a notice regarding the missing original records, in hopes that some researcher out there has knowledge of the location of the records in some institution, archive, or even in a private collection. Maryland Archives and Maryland Historical Society are aware of the situation, and co-operated with me in the search in 1988, so they are interested bystanders now. If you have any information please contact me. Frank Parker Hudson

TUMNEY/TOOMEY/TOORNEY Seeking origins of family, additional information, and destination in Baltimore. My step-great-great grandmother, Katherine (Kate) TUMNEY, was also known by surname TOOMEY and TOORNEY. Death records and tombstone indicate she was b. Aug 16, 1861, Sykesville, Howard Co., Maryland. She married Patrick Thomas FLANNERY abt 1888, presumably in Baltimore. She is his second wife, following the death of Margaret Anna KEYHAN in 1887. She bore one child, a daughter, Lucille Littleton FLANNERY, Aug 1, 1889, in Baltimore. (Lucille had three half-brothers, ranging in age from 11 to 17, at the time of her birth: Eugene Michael FLANNERY, William Joseph FLANNERY, and OSCAR Aloysius FLANNERY.) Baptismal records for Lucille indicate witnesses Lilly GORGES (nee FLANNERY) and Jacob LEE. *Littleton* is not a FLANNERY family name; any leads on the origin or significance of this name, given the period? Katherine T. FLANNERY died Feb. 23, 1922 at Eutaw Place, Baltimore, age 60. Her father is Daniel TUMNEY and might have been born in Maryland or Ireland, depending on which record is consulted. Mother, Mary DOWD, appears to be MD born. Is Daniel TUMNEY related to Daniel Henry TOOMEY, an Irish immigrant who came to Howard Co. in the 1700s to teach school at the Carrollton estate? Colleen Flannery

KEHAN/KEYHAN/KANE/CANE/CAIN Seeking origins of famine immigrant family. My great-great grandmother, Margaret (Maggie) Anna KEYHAN, was also known by surname KEHAN, KANE, CAIN, CANE (the latter spellings on death records). Death records and tombstone indicate she was b. May 11, 1851, Co.Limerick, Ireland and possibly resided there for two years prior to settling in Baltimore. She married Patrick Thomas FLANNERY on Sep 13, 1870 in Baltimore, and had three sons, Eugene Michael FLANNERY, William Joseph FLANNERY, and OSCAR Aloysius FLANNERY. She died Dec 2, 1887 in Baltimore, age 36, with no recorded births for 10 years. Baptismal records indicate her younger brother, Daniel KEYHAN, as witness to her first son's birth. Records indicate he died age 25, probably unmarried, in Baltimore on Feb. 20, 1883. Inferred parents are father, James KEHAN, b. C. 1828-1830, death unknown; mother Rosanna HARVEY who appears in cemetery records as Annie KENAN, d. Dec 30, 1892 in Baltimore. Inferred siblings are Susan KEYHAN, b abt 1853 presumably in Baltimore, and Rosanna KEHAN, b abt. Mar 1863. There appears to be a Thomas KEEHAN in the city in 1870, age 20, and a Joseph KEHAN, 16, as well. I wonder if this line is related to the Mayor of Baltimore, George KANE, who serves for a single year in 1877? Colleen Flannery

COLLINS Jeremiah COLLLINS b. abt 1829 in Ireland m. Johannah SULLIVAN, b. abt 1835, Ireland. Children include: Patrick COLLINS b. abt 1849 Ireland, George COLLINS, b abt 1851 Ireland, John COLLINS, b abt 1860, MD, Anna COLLINS b abt 1862, MD, and Agnes Regina Collins b. Mar 1, 1870 Baltimore. Dates of birth are based on 1870 census in Baltimore with exception of greatgrandmother, Agnes. Family appears to have emmigrated post 1851 and may have spent some time in New York before arriving in Baltimore. Odd gap of births between 1851 and 1860. Seek more information on Patrick, George, or Anna or father, Jeremiah. Where did they go, where/when did they die? Agnes m. William Joseph FLANNERY in approx 1899 or 1900, possibly in New York City where he was working (can find no record of marriage in Baltimore) and where first 2 sons are born. Her Second son is named for her two brothers, John Patrick FLANNERY, according to family stories. Agnes d. Dec 7, 1913 in Baltimore during birth of 10th child. Her brother, John COLLINS, is mentioned in her obituary living in Brooklyn NY. Mother Johannah is supposed to have lived with the William Joseph FLANNERY family as late as 1907-1909, when she nursed two of her grandsons through scarlet fever (one died). No record of her death in Baltimore records. Did she go to a son in NYC? Family legend makes a connection with Michael COLLINS, the Irish hero/rebel of 1922. There is a likeness in photos. However, there no direct line possible so Jeremiah would have to be descended from a brother to Michael's father. Any information on this famous but apparently uncharted line welcome. Colleen Flannery
